Introduction to RCAHMS & Collection Material

To begin the first day, the participants explored a selection of RCAHMS collection material. This included North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board drawings from the Shearer and Annan Collection, a selection of construction photographs from the Sir William Arrol Collection and current RCAHMS survey photographs of power stations and wind farms.  They were given a short introduction to the history and development of hydroelectric scheme buildings in Scotland and then had the opportunity to discuss the aesthetics of these buildings, and of other energy schemes, with a view to how they could be animated.

Introduction to Stop-Frame Animation & Preparation of Artwork

Following their introduction to RCAHMS collection material, the participants were shown the basic technique of stop-frame animation and taught how to work the video cameras and computers. They then had the opportunity to create some short, simple animations in order to test their skills in preparation for a longer, more complex animation. Once they had decided on a theme for their main animation, the participants then had to prepare copies of the archive material by cutting out the components of the image they wished to move.

Animating & Editing

During the course of the workshop, each participant created one or two complete animations, lasting from around 10 seconds to one minute. Some also completed outdoor animations that reflected the theme of ‘energy’. * The participants were then taught some simple editing processes and were able to add titles to their pieces. To finish the process, sound effects were added and some of the participants, who are musicians, added their own soundtracks.

*These were completed either with a digital stills camera, which was then uploaded to a laptop, or the filmmakers professional camera with still frame capture.

Event

Following the workshop, the animations were professionally edited and compiled to create a DVD. The participants, their families and friends were then invited back to the Stables in Cromarty for a screening of this DVD and each participant provided with their own copy.

Further Development

Following the workshop, the participants (many of whom work in the arts and / or education) felt inspire to try out stop- frame animation for themselves and others.
