"Sense of Place"
This workshop provided children and young people from Oasis Youth Group and throughout the Isles of Benbecula and North & South Uist the opportunity to explore the place they live in more detail and examine their own ‘Sense of Place’. The children could attend all five days of the workshop, or drop in, as they were able. The participants used their explorations to create a series of artworks utilising a variety of different media.
The workshop was designed to facilitate the generic learning outcomes (GLOs) identified by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council's 'Inspiring Learning for All' (ILFA) framework.
"The participants engaged with the archive material best when there was a story behind it to help explain what it was. They could relate well to the sites that were being discussed through the archive material to sites they had visited or seen."
- Siobhan, Treasured Places Project Manager
- Jon McLeod, artist & workshop leader
- RCAHMS Treasured Places Team
- Sylvia Norton, Oasis Youth Club leader
"By tying in artefacts and archive images to a place they knew well, the young people seemed to broaden their understanding of their known world. They learned to see things insightfully and critically, to make aesthetic judgments and to develop manual creative skills"
- Jon, Artist and Workshop Leader
